When a Healthcare Assistant, Support Worker or Senior Carer arrives for a temporary shift, a clear handover helps them understand the setting and the work expected of them. A short, practical briefing can save time at the start of a busy shift.
Confirm the assignment before arrival
Share the location, reporting time, length of shift, role and name of the person who will receive the worker. Explain any essential site requirements, such as where to report, identification to bring and whom to contact if travel is delayed. If the assignment changes, tell the staffing supplier and the worker promptly.
Make the first contact clear
On arrival, introduce the worker to the person supervising the shift. Show them where to find the relevant care plans, local procedures and reporting routes. Point out practical essentials such as hand hygiene facilities, protective equipment, emergency exits and how to summon help.
The provider remains responsible for its own care plans, procedures and supervision. A temporary worker should know who can answer questions and what to do if a task falls outside the agreed role or their competence.
Brief on the people and priorities
Explain the key tasks for that shift and any changes the worker needs to know. Share relevant information about communication preferences, mobility support and individual routines through the provider’s approved systems. Keep the briefing focused on what the worker needs to carry out the assignment safely and respectfully.
Ask the worker to repeat back any critical points or raise questions. Do not assume that previous experience at another service means they know your local processes.
Agree how the shift will end
Before the worker leaves, identify who will receive the handover and where records should be completed. Confirm how concerns, incidents or unfinished tasks should be reported. This helps the next team understand what happened during the shift.
