Living abroad while a parent or relative needs support in the UK can make everyday decisions feel harder. You may be coordinating visits across time zones, relying on relatives for updates or wondering how to help without taking away your loved one’s independence.
A useful starting point is a shared plan: what your relative wants, what support they need and how everyone will stay in touch.
Start with your relative’s wishes
Talk with your loved one about the parts of daily life they would like help with. Ask what matters to them, including routines, preferred visiting times and the qualities they would appreciate in a carer. Involve them in decisions wherever possible rather than making arrangements around them.
Build a realistic picture of everyday support
Write down the tasks, days and times involved. Companionship, meal preparation and help with daily routines may call for different experience from more complex support. Explain the requirements clearly and ask prospective carers about their relevant experience and the tasks they can undertake.
If needs are unclear or changing, seek an appropriate assessment rather than guessing what support will be enough.
Agree how updates will work
Discuss communication before support begins. Your loved one’s wishes and privacy should guide what information is shared and with whom.
- Who will be the main family contact?
- Which contact method works across time zones?
- When would a routine update be useful?
- Who can help locally if something unexpected happens?
Agree reasonable contact times and distinguish routine updates from urgent concerns. A message to a family member abroad should not be the only plan for an urgent situation.
Arrange a conversation before deciding
A video introduction can help your relative, the prospective carer and family members discuss expectations together. Ask about experience, availability, communication and what happens if the carer is unavailable. Find out which recruitment checks have been completed and whether anything needs clarification.
Put the practical arrangements in writing
Clarify duties, hours, rates, payment arrangements and notice expectations. Identify who is agreeing the arrangement and who will handle payments. Also discuss a local backup plan if the usual carer cannot attend.
Review the arrangement with your loved one once support has started. Their comfort and experience matter as much as the updates you receive.
