Caring for a partner, relative or friend can become part of everyday life. Taking a break may mean a few hours for an appointment, a regular afternoon to rest, or time away. Planning ahead helps the person you support feel comfortable and gives you confidence about what will happen while you are away.
Start with the person’s usual routine
Write down what an ordinary day looks like. Include preferred meal times, activities, communication needs, mobility support and anything that helps the person feel settled. Ask the person what matters to them and involve them in choosing support wherever possible.
It also helps to be specific about timing. Do you need someone for a short visit, regular hours or a longer stay? Will another family member cover part of the time? A clear picture of the gap makes it easier to discuss suitable options.
Ask what support may be available
There are different ways to arrange a break, including help at home and local respite services. Your local council or carers’ centre can explain what is available nearby. If you are an unpaid carer, ask your council about a carer’s assessment. The person you support may also need a care needs assessment if council-arranged support is being considered.

Prepare for a conversation with an independent carer
If you are arranging private support, tell the prospective carer what you need covered, when the support should start and how long it may be needed. Ask about relevant experience, availability, the agreed tasks and the ongoing rate. Make time for an introductory conversation before deciding whether the arrangement is right for both sides.
Keep important contact details and an agreed plan accessible to the person providing support. Discuss what they should do if plans change or they need to reach you. Share only information that is needed for the arrangement, through an appropriate secure route.
