Supported living cover needs more detail than a shift time and a job title. A temporary Support Worker needs to understand the assignment, the people they will support and the boundaries of their role.
A clear booking brief helps a staffing supplier assess suitability and gives your service a stronger starting point for the worker’s first shift.
Describe the actual assignment
Explain whether the worker will support one person or work across a service. Set out the shift hours, expected duties, staffing arrangements and relevant experience needed.
Describe the approach your service takes to promoting choice and independence. The brief should explain how the worker can support people’s routines and preferences rather than assuming that experience in another care setting will transfer automatically.
Be specific about essential competencies
Identify the skills needed for the assignment and distinguish essential requirements from skills that can be covered through local induction.
- Relevant supported living experience.
- Communication approaches used within the service.
- Any required moving and handling competence.
- Any medication duties and associated competence or authorisation.
- Any individual support requirements needing additional training.
Share sensitive information through an appropriate secure route and limit it to what is necessary for assessing the assignment and preparing the worker.
Explain the night-cover requirement clearly
If you need night cover, state whether you require a waking night or sleep-in arrangement. Describe the expected duties, hours, staffing support and response arrangements.
Do not rely on the word “night” to communicate the requirement. Clear details help the supplier confirm worker suitability and provide a quote for the actual assignment.
Prepare a practical local induction
Identify who will welcome the worker and provide the handover. Explain how to access the information they need, record their work and contact the responsible person during the shift.
Cover emergency procedures, safeguarding reporting, lone-working arrangements where relevant, and the tasks the worker is authorised to undertake. Give the worker an opportunity to ask questions before taking on their duties.
Agree how changes and concerns will be handled
Confirm the supplier contact for lateness, absence, suitability concerns or a change in requirements. If the assignment changes, discuss it with the supplier rather than assuming the original booking covers additional duties.
After the shift, useful feedback explains what went well and what could improve. This helps inform future matching and gives both organisations a clearer record of the assignment.
